'Dogs fall in series opener, 4-3

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Fresno State softball team fell to New Mexico 4-3 in nine innings on Thursday night at Lobo Softball Stadium.

Fresno State (32-17, 11-8 MW) was led by Sophia Medellin at the plate, the senior went 2-for-3 with one walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

New Mexico struck first with a two-out home run in the bottom of the first inning.

Fresno State had two runners on base after a hit and fielder's choice with two outs. Lauren Almeida brought the lead runner home with a single to the second baseman. Kealani Nitta gave the Bulldogs the lead with a slap single to the catcher, bringing another run across home plate.

New Mexico tied the game in the bottom of the third with one run on three hits. The Lobos took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with their second solo home run of the game.

With the pressure on the Bulldogs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Medellin got on base with a one-out single up the middle. The next batter was retired, but Juliana Wilson kept the inning alive after drawing a two-out walk. Emma Martinez came up clutch for the Bulldogs with an RBI-single to right field, tying the game.

New Mexico loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but Taylor Gilmore stranded the runners to push the game into extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Wilson once again drew a two-out walk for the Bulldogs to keep the inning alive. With two runners on base, Martinez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. New Mexico retired the next batter to strand the runners.

The Lobos walked it off in the bottom of the frame with an RBI-double to center field.
